Towards sustainability
Electric motors consume around half of the electricity generated worldwide, yet conventional systems waste a significant amount of it. We are working to change that.
The Sustainable Multi-sector Electrification using Advanced Integrated Motor Drive Technologies programme grant (AIMD) combines the motor and its power electronics into a single Integrated Motor Drive. By integrating these components into one unit, we eliminate the bulky cabling and cabinets that constrain conventional systems, improving efficiency while reducing cost, weight and material use. This approach can cut energy losses by up to 55%, halve embedded carbon, and reduce reliance on rare-earth materials.
This 5 year research programme is funded by the EPSRC and led by Dr Liliana de Lillo, brings together the Universities of Nottingham, Bristol and Newcastle, alongside several industry partners, to make integrated drives the foundation of cleaner transport, industry and power generation.
Powering sustainability.
